Mongol Rally update
30-Jul-2009 at 10:07 by DarkJedi (Watercooled Fool)

Since my last post Sam and Henry have made great progress (via the sceneic route it has to be said!) down into Italy, across through Greece into Turkey, where they spent a few nights.
From there they continued into Georgia, and are now at Baku in Azerbaijan waiting for a ferry to take them across the Caspian to Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan.
Perhaps not unsurprisingly Georgia and Azerbaijan have proved somewhat expensive to drive through as their stickered bright green Hyundai is an easy target for the cops, innocent or not!

Sadly they did not make it onto the ship at Baku as their names were missed off the Turkmeni invite list, so they must wait until the embassy in London opens this morning to see if this can be sorted.

Plan B is a ship to Kazakhstan for which they already have visas, but that would be a longer way around (and Google Maps isn't showing me much in the way of roads, hmmmm!)

We wait for news!

The few days in Istanbul were particularly arduous

Yoda in the Mongol Rally
20-Jul-2009 at 10:38 by DarkJedi (Watercooled Fool)

As many of you know, fragLANd regular Yoda is taking part in this year's Mongol Rally, a charity run where participants have to buy and drive a 10+ year old car of less than 1 litre capacity all the way from England to Ulaan Bator in Mongolia.

We have here a picture of Henry (Yoda) and his friend Sam's offensive green Hyundai as it makes its way around Goodwood prior to leaving for Dover on Saturday afternoon:

(Hmm I can't help but think other cars perhaps look a little better prepared for travel on the dirt roads that will make up most of the route!)

A couple of other pictures of Henry and Sam...though no indication of how long they will be wearing these outfits! ;)

(for more images visit this page)

We will be following Yoda's progress over the following few weeks with updates here, though of course daily (where possible!) updates will be available directly from their blog here.

To donate to their causes, please visit here for more information. They need all the help you can offer!

Yoda is also using trackr! to track his route via GPS here, though sadly much of the route through France is missing (we think so that their visits to various vineyards along the route aren't logged)

NeoTokyo Source Mod
6-Jul-2009 at 20:57 by Basic

A very cool mod for source has been released NeoTokyo. I've been playing it for a few days now, and loving it. Its quite brutal in some places. Sorta CSS meets BF2 (in cyberpunk).

All you need is any Source game and away you go...

Microsoft to offer 'special' Windows 7 upgrade deals
4-Jun-2009 at 09:08 by Cools (Somebody teach me Quake!)

Microsoft on Tuesday confirmed that it will offer consumers "special deals" on an upgrade to Windows 7 if they buy a Vista-equipped PC before the launch of the new operating system.

Earlier in the day, Microsoft announced that it would start selling Windows 7 on Oct. 22, and acknowledged that it would have some kind of free or discounted upgrade offer in place before that.

But other than the name of the program -- "Windows 7 Upgrade Option" -- the company remained mum on the deal's details, including start and end dates, how much computer makers and retailers will charge for the upgrade, or even what versions of Windows Vista will be eligible.

"This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC," said company spokesman Brandon LeBlanc in a post to the Windows 7 blog Tuesday afternoon. More information, said LeBlanc, would be disclosed as the program's kick-off nears.

But Microsoft isn't the only source of information regarding the upgrade offer, which will probably resemble Vista Express Upgrade, a program that gave people who purchased Windows XP PCs free or inexpensive upgrades to Vista.

TechARP.com, a Web site that has a solid track record in pegging Microsoft plans, said as early as January that Microsoft would unveil an upgrade program for Windows 7. In April, TechARP reported that Microsoft had changed the name of the program to Windows 7 Upgrade Option, the same moniker the company used today.

In a long account last updated two weeks ago, TechARP spelled out what its OEM sources have revealed about the upgrade offer.

According to the site, PCs with a license for Vista Home Premium, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate purchased between June 26, 2009 and Jan. 31, 2010 will be eligible for a free or reduced-price Windows 7 upgrade.

AMD shows off world's first DirectX 11 GPU
4-Jun-2009 at 09:06 by Cools (Somebody teach me Quake!)

AMD demonstrated the world's first DirectX11 GPU today in front of a live audience, stating that AMD will be the first to release a graphics card with a 40nm DirectX11-friendly GPU.

AMD is fully committed to bringing DirectX11 to the market first, something they have stated in a press release, without an official release date. DirectX11 promises to bring smoother graphics, faster Windows 7 experience - meaning Windows 7 will run faster - higher quality games and better performance than anything previously released.

AMD and TSMC gave some demonstrations of the new processing power of the 40nm DirectX11 GPU, in a video with improved detail in character models through tessellation.
